Clinicalls.gov recently released data on 45,620 clinical trials that was categorized by design characteristics, funder type and disease area to help identify patterns of trial publication in medical journals. Fascinatingly, the analysis revealed correlations between whether a study is published or not and variables such as phase size, design choices and even what specialty it relates too! Lead author Mdalena Zerzyna commented “It’s amazing how much influence small factors can have over larger outcomes -especially when dealing with something as important as research.

It is clear that the scientific record contains missing pieces, and what remains may not always be reliable. In other words, there are many unknowns when analyzing existing research – making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions about our world.

The Pincet article series includes a set of 5 recommendations for how to increase value and reduce waste in research. The most important are:

1.To encourage greater public involvement in the research process, funders must be transparent about their decision-making processes and invest in studies to see how effectively stakeholders are prioritizing projects of social importance.

2.Research funders and regulators should strive to ensure the utmost efficiency in new primary research. This includes requiring proposals for such projects are justified by systematic reviews of existing evidence, as well as increased funding for syntheses that provide a comprehensive overview of what is already known. Through this heightened level of monitoring and auditing, we can better guarantee each project’s success and cost-effectiveness.

3.Unlocking the data behind biomedical research and giving transparency to scientific progress: that’s what we’re striving for. By encouraging researchers to make public all protocols, analysis plans or analytical choices, as well as raw data within 6 months of publication – knowledge opens up new opportunities! We can unlock a greater understanding of biology than ever before by making this information widely available.

4.The future of research relies upon accountable and dependable practices; reward those that foster a culture where replicable results can be achieved. Through grants, acknowledgements, or other incentives promote the efficient duplication studies to validate accuracy. Measure progress by tracking how much ongoing independent replication and reproduction is taking place in order to guarantee reliable outcomes for everyone involved.

5.To ensure that research is conducted safely and proportionately, a collective effort from regulators, policy makers, researchers, health professionals and patients needs to take place. Monitoring should occur in order to identify any delays or inconsistencies caused by discrepancies between laws/regulations/guidelines for the purpose of creating cohesion among them all.

Rewardalliance.net is your go-to resource to discover creative ways of improving research and avoiding wasted effort – whether it’s on basic studies or experiments! With access to valuable documents, information, and resources from top experts in the field you’re sure to find new methods for maximizing success.

Research is an invaluable tool, yet much of its potential is lost due to basic errors in design and evaluation. In 2009 alone, the world wasted over $100 billion on flawed studies in Life Sciences; a glaringly significant financial loss that could easily have been avoided with simple preventative steps such as randomisation or blinding of clinical trials. To ensure our research investment yields fruitful results we must take action: close monitoring for problems followed by targeted and effective solutions are essential to maximize value from scientific endeavours while minimizing wastefulness.

A comprehensive collection of five papers analyzing the most pressing issues in biomedical research, creating a roadmap on how to minimize waste and increase value, is now available. Keeping up with new developments has never been easier- an info hub blog section gives readers fast access to relevant content while events are organized seamlessly through their calendar feature. Furthermore, additional resources guide users towards related websites and tools that allow them to take actionable steps towards maximizing efficiency within the field..

This year’s Cochrane-REWARD prize ceremony saw the UK Equator Centre, EBM DataLab and James Lind Alliance jointly celebrated for their commitment to reducing research waste. The esteemed panel of judges awarded each organisation a GBP 2500 prize in recognition of their innovative local or pilot initiatives that could potentially lead to huge reductions in waste. Amongst 15 similarly worthy applicants, these three were chosen as this year’s winners on 17 September 2022 at the 2022 Cochrane Colloquium – an honourable occasion indeed!

The UK Equator Centre is revolutionizing the way authors are able to locate and utilize reporting guidelines. By developing the Equator Good Reports Tool, they have overcome key barriers for writers seeking assistance with their manuscripts. With BMJ Open’s integration of Penelope.ai in October 2017 – along with its incorporation of EQUATOR’s tool in January 2018 – publishers now have a convenient means by which they can offer guidance without significant effort on behalf of both author and editor alike:

  • Strict adherence to accurate reporting standards is essential for reliable data.
  • In an effort to raise the bar for all published works, we are striving to enhance our publication standards.
  • Decreasing author and editor time commitment can help support creative exploration, allowing writers to engage more fully in the art of storytelling.
  • reduce publishing time and cost.

The UK EQUATOR’s automated manuscript check, which requires authors to fill out a checklist prior to submitting their work, is helping more journals receive higher quality manuscripts. This pioneering project has been met with much enthusiasm and will soon be implemented in 50 additional partnering journals across the next two years!

The REWARD Alliance is working to ensure meaningful research that benefits all stakeholders by creating the highest value possible. With cooperation between groups, they are striving for a future where groundbreaking discoveries can be made and shared with the world.

Current or planned Working Groups include:

  • The Research Funders Working Group brings together funders from across several countries, convening regularly to discuss how best to get value out of their investments in 5 distinct stages. An exciting opportunity awaits – become part on an international platform and collaborate with like minded peers! Network at our upcoming meeting taking place June 1st in Den Haag by emailing contact@rewardalliance.net
  • Liz Wager is leading the charge to bring together an innovative working group of editors and publishers! If you are interested in being part of this exciting venture, reach out at contact@rewardalliance.net for more information on how you can get involved.
  • Exploring how to reduce research waste, a ‘Research on Research’ Working Group is seeking contributors. The group will map current methodical initiatives and dive into five key pillars of REWARD as part of their mission – offering the chance for individuals to join them in conducting methodological studies which aim to fill knowledge gaps and build an extensive bibliography about each aspect! Interested? Contact Mina Nasser at contact@rewardalliance.net today!
  • We are forming an incredible Working Group to connect those working in research review, regulation and governance with the REWARD Alliance. Our current members of this group include ethics committee members but we will welcome colleagues from any regulatory or governing background! Together as a team, our goal is twofold – firstly looking at how regulations can help reduce waste by making sure researchers plan their studies properly; secondly ensuring that all new findings receive proper documentation so they may be shared accurately among peers. If you would like to get involved please contact contact@rewardalliance.net now and join us on this exciting journey!

As the need arises, we will consider other groupings that have a common interest in a specific aspect or area of research waste.

At the REWARD/EQUATOR Conference in Edinburgh, UK this past September we shared a special statement: The REWARD Statement. We invite individuals and organizations to become part of something remarkable – join us today and help make waves through our powerful movement!

Read the REWARD statement and join the campaign.

At our research facility, we recognise that there is still much more to be done in order to reach the peak of excellence. To make sure the impact from our work is maximized, it’s essential for us to ensure a few key points are met:

  • making sound decisions when selecting which projects take priority;
  • relying on reliable methods and garnering accurate results throughout every step of an experiment;
  • using appropriate management techniques based on each project’s associated risk levels;
  • providing access to all relevant findings – whether positive or negative outcomes- as well as complete and legible reports regarding such experiments.

We all have a duty to help improve the wellbeing of our world by utilizing research and knowledge. Our mission is to utilize the synergy between funders, regulators, organizations, publishers, editors and fellow researchers in order to maximize value while minimizing waste within this process – creating an environment with improved health outcomes for everyone on earth.
